The latest Vatican Synod proposals seek to expand the participation of the "People of God“ in the selection of bishops.To understand why this matters, we must look beyond the proposal itself. For the architects of the post-conciliar Church, the expression “People of God” became the foundation for a new way of understanding the relationship between the hierarchy and the faithful. The emphasis is no longer placed primarily upon a divinely established hierarchy that teaches and governs the Church, but upon a community in which all the baptized are increasingly presented as sharing responsibility for determining the Church’s path. This new vision naturally produces synodality.
