La vita di s. Germano è nota soprattutto attraverso la biografia scritta dal suo amico Fortunato di Poitiers impostata, peraltro, con un troppo evidente gusto per il meraviglioso. I documenti piú seri, relativi soprattutto alla fondazione dell'abbazia di S. Germano e ai primi tempi della sua storia, sono scomparsi al tempo delle invasioni normanne, alla fine del IX sec., e non è quindi possibile effettuare su di essi un controllo severo. Altri documenti sono falsi, redatti molto tempo dopo.
Germano, nato ad Autun verso la fine del V sec., sarebbe stato vittima di due tentativi di assassinio, a cui sfuggí miracolosamente: il primo per una minaccia di aborto mentre la madre lo attendeva ed il secondo poco dopo per avvelenamento. Esta salvación ha sido objeto de la búsqueda y la investigación de los profetas que vaticinaron sobre la gracia destinada a ustedes.
Ellos trataban de descubrir el tiempo y las circunstancias señaladas por el Espíritu de Cristo, que estaba presente en ellos y anunciaba anticipadamente los sufrimientos reservados a Cristo y la gloria que les seguiría.
A ellos les fue revelado que estaban al servicio de un mensaje destinado no a sí mismos, sino a ustedes. Bien-aimés, sur le salut, les prophètes ont fait porter leurs interrogations et leurs recherches, eux qui ont prophétisé pour annoncer la grâce qui vous est destinée.
Ils cherchaient quel temps et quelles circonstances voulait indiquer l’Esprit du Christ, présent en eux, quand il attestait par avance les souffrances du Christ et la gloire qui s’ensuivrait.
Il leur fut révélé que ce n’était pas pour eux-mêmes, mais pour vous, qu’ils étaient au service de ce message, annoncé maintenant par ceux qui vous ont évangélisés dans l’Esprit Saint envoyé du ciel ; même des anges désirent se pencher pour scruter ce message.

Born a slave. His master, Jean Berard, taught Pierre to read and write, and when Berard moved to New York in 1787, he took along several slaves, including Pierre and his sister Rosalie. There Pierre was apprenticed to a leading hairdresser, and soon became a popular stylist himself. When Berard died, Pierre stayed on to care for the ailing widow; he was freed from slavery when Madame Berard died in 1807.
Working for himself, Pierre became wealthy. He fell in love with Juliette Noel, a 15 year old slave, and he purchased her, freed her, and married her. As the two took their faith seriously, they started work to help the poor in New York. They turned their own home into a shelter for orphans, a credit bureau, an employment agency, a hostel for priests and a other poor travellers.
