The Sanctuary of Mary Undoer of Knots in Cancún, Mexico, has received a significant spiritual privilege after being formally linked to the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome. Through decrees approved in August by the Vatican’s Apostolic Penitentiary and the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, the sanctuary may now offer the faithful the opportunity to obtain a plenary indulgence in perpetuity, provided the conditions established by the Catholic Church are fulfilled.
A NEW DOOR OF GRACE IN CANCÚN: MARY UNDOER OF KNOTS SANCTUARY GRANTED PLENARY INDULGENCE | SG News
Located amid the jungle of Mexico’s Caribbean region, the Sanctuary of Mary Undoer of Knots began welcoming pilgrims in 2016 and has since developed into an important center of Marian devotion. According to its rector, Father Luis Pablo Garza, the sanctuary receives tens of thousands of pilgrims and, during particularly busy periods, has seen attendance rise dramatically. Pilgrims come from across Mexico as well as from other countries. A plenary indulgence is not the forgiveness of sins. Rather, it is the remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven. To obtain the indulgence at the sanctuary, Catholics must receive sacramental Confession and Holy Communion, pray for the intentions of the Holy Father, reject attachment to all sin, and make the pilgrimage while participating devoutly in a sacred celebration or praying the Lord’s Prayer and the Creed. The indulgence may be obtained on August 5, the feast connected with the dedication of Saint Mary Major; December 8, the sanctuary’s patronal feast; on solemnities of the Blessed Virgin Mary; once each year on a day personally chosen by the faithful; and during devotional pilgrimages to the sanctuary. Father Garza said the new privilege is not simply an honor, but also a responsibility to make the sanctuary an even stronger place of prayer, reconciliation, conversion and encounter with Christ through the intercession of Mary. For pilgrims carrying the “knots” of suffering, family struggles, uncertainty and spiritual burdens, the sanctuary continues to offer a message of trust: Mary leads the faithful closer to her Son, Jesus Christ.
