Bishop Glettler Rejoices in Training Muslim Imams at Catholic University

Bishop Hermann Glettler of Innsbruck, Austria, and Islamic theologian Abualwafa Mohammed have published a dialogue book. The title is Nicht den Hass, die Liebe wählen(meaning: Choose Love, Not Hate). The bright green cover and interior images come from Glettler’s own artwork Crossfit, located in the crypt of Berlin Cathedral. The piece features welded, inverted crucifixes—bodies absent, evoking severed limbs. There is no trace of a dismembered crescent. Key phrases.

Bishop Glettler on Muslim communities in Europe: "In every respect, it is necessary to systematically dismantle the long-conditioned fear of others. Last but not least, we must oppose the right-wing populist parties in Europe that are declaring war on Islam in the name of the Christian West."

Bishop Glettler on climate change: "We are faced with the choice of whether we want to drive our planet to its final exhaustion or not. It is not yet certain that we will still be able to turn the tide in the current climate emergency."

And: "Once our planet's ecological systems have passed the dangerous tipping points, we will merely be passengers on an apocalyptic merry-go-round. We still have the choice of what kind of future we want. And we must pool all our constructive forces with what little confidence we have left."

Bishop Glettler on the training of Islamic imams at Catholic institutions: "In Innsbruck, we celebrated ‘10 years of Islamic Theology at the University of Innsbruck’ with a ceremony in November 2023. The gradual expansion of the Islamic religious education program at the Catholic Theological Faculty enables the qualified training of teachers for schools. With the introduction of a master’s program in Islamic Theology, a foundation has also been created for imam and pastoral training in Austria."
