Benedikt XVI. war von 2005 bis 2013 Oberhaupt der katholischen Kirche. Er war der erste deutsche Papst seit 482 Jahren. Vor seiner Wahl war er gut 23 Jahre lang Leiter der Glaubenskongregation im Vatikan. In seiner Amtszeit versuchte er, Glaube und Vernunft zu versöhnen, die christlich-humanistischen Wurzeln Europas wiederzubeleben und die Kirche von Skandalen zu reinigen. Kirchengeschichte schrieb er mit seinem freiwilligen Amtsverzicht im Februar 2013.

Funeral of Pope Benedict XVI
Three years ago, tens of thousands gathered in a cold, foggy St. Peter’s Square as Pope Francis presided over the simple and solemn funeral of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, the first pope to resign in nearly 600 years. Royalty, world leaders, clergy, and families joined in prayer as Benedict’s coffin was carried into the square, where Archbishop Georg Gänswein knelt and kissed it and the rosary was prayed in Latin. In his homily, Francis reflected on Jesus’ words, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit,” entrusting Benedict — “faithful friend of the Bridegroom” — to God and recalling his wisdom, tenderness, and devotion. As bells tolled and the crowd applauded, the coffin was taken into the basilica crypt, while banners such as “Santo Subito” expressed the affection of the faithful for the theologian-pope who once warned of the “dictatorship of relativism” and shocked the world in 2013 by resigning for reasons of age and strength.
Pope Benedict XVI's body lay in state in St. Peter's Basilica from 2 to 4 January 2023, during which around 195,000 mourners paid their respects. His funeral took place in St. Peter's Square on 5 January and was attended by around 50,000 people, presided over by Pope Francis, whose role as an incumbent pope overseeing the funeral of his predecessor was unprecedented given the order of papal succession.
