When we study the sad story of the fall of the Western Empire it is hard for us understand the Romans' shortness of views, tranquility, and indifference toward the looming danger. To further aggravate its other ills, Rome suffered from an inveterate habit of winning. At its feet were the most glorious nations of antiquity: Egypt, Greece, all of Asia. The ferocity of the Celts had been definitely softened. The Rhine and the Danube constituted a splendid natural defense to the Empire. How could anyone fear that the barbarians, who roamed the virgin forests of central Europe, could pose a serious risk to such an immense political edifice?

Lorsque l’on étudie la triste histoire de la chute de l’Empire d’Occident, on a du mal à comprendre l’étroitesse de vue, l’indolence et la tranquillité des Romains devant le danger qui croissait. Rome souffrait, en plus de ses autres maux, de l’habitude invétérée de vaincre.
À ses pieds se trouvaient les plus glorieuses nations de l’antiquité, l’Égypte, la Grèce, toute l’Asie. La férocité des Celtes était définitivement domptée. Le Rhin et le Danube fournissaient à l’Empire une splendide défense naturelle. Comment craindre que les barbares, qui vaguaient dans les forêts vierges de l’Europe centrale, puissent exposer à un risque sérieux cet immense édifice politique ?
