Confirmed: Pope Leo XIV has appointed Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, 60, as Metropolitan Archbishop of Chieti-Vasto.

The move brings Gambetti’s tenure as Archpriest of St Peter’s Basilica, Vicar General for Vatican City and President of the Fabric of St Peter to an end. His successor at the Vatican has not yet been announced.

Cardinal Gambetti's years in the Vatican were marked by repeated controversies, many of which were brought to public attention primarily by SilereNonPossum.com. The investigation was based on documents, photographs, videos and testimony.

Among other issues, SilereNonPossum reported favouritism in personnel appointments - including the hiring of people personally connected to Gambetti. Other scandals included controversial expenditure, costly events and projects, and concerns over the maintenance and management of the Basilica.

Cardinal Gambetti succeeds Archbishop Bruno Forte, whose resignation Pope Leo XIV has accepted.

The transfer comes after months of rumours that Gambetti would be moved from his Vatican positions.

A Conventual Franciscan and former Custos of the Convent of St Francis in Assisi, Gambetti was ordained a priest in 2000, consecrated a bishop in 2020 and created a cardinal by Pope Francis later that year.

Maybe that is because Los Angeles already has a cardinal, Mahoney, even though he is retired.
