Worse than Germany: Cardinal Tarcisio Kikuchi of Tokyo has welcomed the Japanese government's plan to promote "understanding of sexual orientation and gender identity", which was approved on 16 June. The plan involves education and "awareness initiatives" in government, schools, and workplaces, as well as measures to combat "discrimination" against homosexuals. There are some words that once occupied a central place in the life of the Catholic Church but are now seldom heard, and I want to talk about one of those words today. The word is “modernism.” Ask the average Catholic today what modernism is, and many will not know how to answer. Ask when they last heard a sermon about it, and many would say, “Never.” Yet there was a time when the Church regarded modernism as such a grave danger that Pope St. Pius X devoted an entire encyclical to exposing it. In 1907, in Pascendi Dominici Gregis, he called modernism “the synthesis of all heresies.” Those are extraordinary words. Popes do not use language like that lightly. If St. Pius X believed modernism was the synthesis of all heresies, then a question naturally follows: What happened? Did modernism simply disappear? Benedict Chao, the world’s oldest Trappist monk, died on July 31 at Our Lady of Joy Abbey on Lantau Island, Hong Kong, at the age of 108. Born in Hebei, China, in 1918, Chao entered monastic life in 1941 and was ordained a priest in 1949. He belonged to a generation of Chinese Trappists whose monasteries were destroyed during Communist persecution. After fleeing mainland China, Chao and fellow monks lived for a time in Canada and the United States before rebuilding their monastic community in Hong Kong.

French Film Turns Catholic Faith Into "Joke": The French film Tombé du ciel, due in cinemas on August 12, follows Ilyes, a young Muslim from Roubaix who ends up at a Catholic boarding school in Burgundy, where his unfamiliarity with Catholic beliefs and practices becomes a recurring source of blasphemies about the faith. In one sequence, Ilyes, unable to have breakfast, casually eats unconsecrated hosts from a packet intended for Sunday Mass. “He is eating the whole Body of Christ!” another character exclaims, referring to the Catholic belief in the Eucharist. Priest Clings to Cathedral Column as Earthquake Strikes: The video captured a priest clinging to a column as an earthquake struck western Colombia on August 10. New Apostolate for the Roman rite in Canada: The Institute of the Good Shepherd (IBP) has established a new apostolate for the traditional Roman Rite in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, with the permission of Archbishop Guy Desrochers. The first Mass was celebrated on July 19. The IBP was founded in 2006 by five former priests of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX/FSSPX). This appears to be its first foundation in Canada.
