Cardinal McCarrick Charged

Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, 91, was charged Wednesday with three counts of indecent assault and battery of a teenager, 16, during a wedding reception at Wellesley College, Massachusetts, in the 1970s.

According to BostonGlobe.com (July 29), he must appear at the court for an August 26 arraignment. So far, accusations of several men failed because of the statute of limitations. At the time, McCarrick was a monsignor and secretary to Cardinal Terence Cooke (+1983).

He often went on trips with the accuser’s family. On June 8, 1974, the accuser was at his brother’s wedding reception when McCarrick told him his father wanted the two of them to “have a talk” because the teenager was being mischievous and not attending church.

He said McCarrick groped his genitals when they were walking around the campus. After returning, McCarrick led him into a small room, telling him “to go to confession” and then fondling his genitals. The accuser recounted later incidents where McCarrick abused him in Arlington and at hotels in Newton.

McCarrick’s address listed in the court filings is the Vianney Renewal Center in Dittmer, Missouri. Many prelates close to McCarrick who claimed "they knew nothing," have been promoted by Francis.
