"It has been said that my Requiem does not express the fear of death and someone has called it a lullaby of death. But it is thus that I see death: as a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as a painful experience. The music of Gounod has been criticised for its overinclination towards human tenderness. But his nature predisposed him to feel this way: religious emotion took this form inside him. Is it not necessary to accept the artist's nature? As to my Requiem, perhaps I have also instinctively sought to escape from what is thought right and proper, after all the years of accompanying burial services on the organ! I know it all by heart. Fauré composed his Requiem in D minor op. 48, between 1887 and 90, and is the best known of his works. The piece premiered in 1888 in La Madeleine, Paris. He revised it in the 1890s, finishing it in 1900.
It is written for orchestra, organ, mixed chorus and two soloists, soprano and baritone, and performed in Latin. Most famous is the soprano aria
Pie Jesu.
It consists of seven movements:

Faurés Requiem weicht in mehrerlei Hinsicht von der traditionellen Totenmesse ab. Im Gegensatz zum traditionellen Ablauf der Messe, und insbesondere zu den Kompositionen von Hector Berlioz und Giuseppe Verdi, verzichtet Fauré auf eine dramatisierende Darstellung des Dies irae und beschränkt sich auf die Vertonung von dessen letztem Vers, dem Pie Jesu. Dagegen fügte er das In paradisum aus den Exequien hinzu, das traditionell bei der Überführung des Leichnams von der Kirche zum Friedhof erklingt. Insgesamt war es Fauré ein Anliegen, ein friedvolles Bild des Todes zu zeichnen.
Fauré propose une vision sereine et réconfortante du Paradis au lieu d'une peinture dramatique du Jugement dernier, tel que décrit dans l'Apocalypse.

レクイエムニ短調作品48は、ガブリエル・フォーレが作曲したレクイエム。
レクイエムの傑作として知られ、フォーレの全作品中で最も演奏機会が多い。フォーレの音楽活動のなかでは、ピアノ四重奏曲第2番ト短調作品45、あるいは『パヴァーヌ』作品50などと並んで、中期の幕開きを告げる代表的な作品に位置づけられる。演奏時間約40分。
しばしば、モーツァルト、ヴェルディの作品とともに「三大レクイエム」の一つに数えられる。
作曲の動機については、父親が1885年7月、母親が1887年12月にそれぞれ死去したことがよく挙げられる。ただし、フォーレが残しているスケッチによると、遅くとも1887年秋には作曲に着手しており、母親の死は直接関係していないと考えられる。さらにフォーレは、
「私のレクイエムは、特定の人物や事柄を意識して書いたものではありません。……あえていえば、楽しみのためでしょうか」 と書いているのである。 また、マドレーヌ寺院での初演では、寺院の司祭から斬新過ぎると叱責されたらしい。このほか、当時から「死の恐ろしさが表現されていない」「異教徒的」などとの批判が出された。フォーレのレクイエムは当時のカトリックの死者ミサでは必須であった「怒りの日」などを欠くなど、そのままではミサに用いることの出来ない形式 …
