Brazil, June 1, 1974. A student says there are people who "make up" their own religion and asks how to help them discover the truth.

Father, I'm a law student, and I'd like to ask you a question.
In this country there's a lot of religious syncretism.
There are people who make up a religion for themselves by taking from other religions
the bits that suit them. How can we convince them they are wrong?
You're a law student, well, my dear colleague, you have all my affection,
you have all my sympathy, my most affectionate sympathy.
Religion means to tie, to tie man to God, It's man's relationship with God.
And what is religion like?
Religion is made up of a series of commandments, some dogmatic items of faith,
and some moral codes of behaviour.
They have been revealed by God to man, first through the Prophets, and then through Christ our Lord, who came to earth for that purpose.
And our Mother the Church holds that revelation in deposit, and it is unchangeable.
So that now, it is as it was twenty centuries ago, and in another twenty centuries it will be as it was twenty centuries ago and is now.
Your friends can't choose whatever religion they fancy, because God is the one who chooses, and God has told us, as he has a right to, which is the path that leads us to himself. And it is our Mother the Catholic Church who holds in deposit -- notice I say in deposit. If you give me -- don't, because I wouldn't know what to do with it, I never have a cent, so don't give me anything.
But if you give me several millions in deposit, and someone comes and asks me for just one small coin from it, I will have to say, "I'm really sorry, I can't give it to you because it isn't mine. This deposit doesn't belong to me, I'm holding it to return it to its owner."
Well, the Church is like that. She doesn't touch anything! Nothing that's essential,
absolutely nothing! The sacraments are the same! The commandments are the same!
The Sacrifice of the Altar is the same!
