Mexico

Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, Vatican's culture minister said on Wednesday that Mexico's folk Death Saint is a blasphemous symbol that shouldn't be part of any religion. Ravasi spoke at a dialogue among believers and nonbelievers in Mexico City. The Santa Muerte is a skeletal figure of a cloaked woman with a scythe in her bony hand. It is worshiped both by drug dealers in Mexico and by the terrified people who live in drug-torn neighborhoods. Ravasi said: “Worshiping such an icon is a degeneration of religion.”

John L. Allen reports that most observers believe that Pope Francis wants to accomplish at least three things: a greater coordination among the Vatican’s congregations, a greater collegiality in decision-making, including a closer relationship with those in the dioceses and a greater transparency in the mechanisms of governance, especially in terms of financial administration. According to him these aims are consistent with the managerial style the Pope has displayed over a lifetime of leadership as a Jesuit provincial, bishop and archbishop.

During his masses Pope Francis does not distribute communion himself, but has other priests doing it while he sits down and waits for the distribution of the sacrament to be completed. In a book he published in 2010 Bergoglio explained this as follows: "I do not want these persons to approach me for a photo." Sandro Magister notes on his blog that Bergoglio knew that among those receiving communion there could be unrepentant public sinners and that at that point it would be difficult to deny them the sacrament. And he knew the public effects that that communion could have, if received from the hands of the archbishop of the Argentine capital. Magister infers that Francis may sense the same danger as pope. Gloria.tv wonders if it is possible to make announcements in the days before papal masses and immediately before papal masses that would clearly indicate who is and who is not permitted to received the Body of Christ?

USA

During a recent appearance on a Lifetime show called “Dear Mom, Love Cher”, Georgia Holt the mother of Cher confessed that she came within minutes of aborting her daughter who is now a singer and actress. Holt was 20 and pregnant when she separated from her husband and had moved back in with her own mother who gave her an ultimatum: reunite with her husband or get an abortion. Holt went to an abortion-mill. She recounted: "I can remember the chairs were chrome, and I was sweating. The sweat was just coming off of me on this chrome and when the door opened and it was my turn, I said, 'Mother, I can't do it.' While Cher's life was narrowly saved from abortion, Cher has shown no interest in defending other unborn babies. Last year she tweeted that it would be an act of "karma" if pro-life Rep. Todd Akin would "get raped by man with HIV/AIDS" after Akin said he was against abortion even in cases of rape. She has also vociferously defended Planned Parenthood. Gloria.tv wonders why Hollywood celebrities (with very few exceptions) feel so inextricably linked to the culture of death? Could these people possibly think that this unbridled hatred for innocent unborn babies will further their career?

While a photo of the Pope giving communion to a pro-abortion politician is scandalous, it does not compare to the sacrilege perpetrated against the Body and Blood of Christ by unworthy recipients even if the minister of the sacrament were a priest or even a layperson.

These kinds of preemptive announcements/admonitions would have prevented the pro-aborts Pelosi and Biden from receiving the Eucharist at the Francis' inauguration mass at the end of March.

If the pope was serious in his letter to Argentine Bishops regarding the denial of the Eucharist to certain public sinners, then he must reinforce those comments with actions and he must do it often. Call it a “teachable” moment for the entire Church.

Gloria.tv, brilliant insight on your part. You should be helping to make policy decisions for the Holy Father.

👍

p.s. Doina, as usual, you look lovely today and are nicely accessorized.
